TIPS ON FINDING STUFF

1. Be calm and think
Recall where you were and what you were doing before you lost the item.

2. Look in the usual places
Start by searching in and around the normal places you leave the item. It might still be there but may have fallen on the floor or be covered by something.

3. Search in a small 3 foot (1 metre) radius

4. Widen your search range to a larger area
If this doesn’t work continue widening the search area little by little.

5. Clean up
Often an easy way to find a lost item is to start by de-cluttering an area and then cleaning it slowly and carefully.

6. Be systematic
When you’re reasonably sure that the lost item is in a certain room or space, divide it into sections. Check each section carefully looking under and around furniture.

7. Search carefully and slowly
Take time to slowly and deliberately look around the room.

8. Check your pockets
Do not forget to look through your pockets for a lost item. Check jackets, coats, purses and briefcases.

9. Check your car
Don’t forget to look inside and around your car.

10. Retrace your steps
Slowly take a walk through all of the locations you’ve been since the item was lost.

11. Call all places you’ve been
Think of all the places you last visited and call them up to see if someone’s found your item.

12. Search from a different perspective
Look for your lost item standing on a chair, kneeling on the floor or even lying down.

13. Let people know what you’re looking for
You never know who’s already spotted the item and is waiting to return it.
You will be amazed how others genuinely want to help.

14. Check with family, friends, colleagues
Sometimes, when you think you’ve lost something, someone else has just moved it or ‘borrowed’ it. Check with anyone who’s been near the item if they’ve seen it recently or know where it is.

15. Did you lend the lost item to someone?
Maybe you can’t find the item because you lent it to someone. Was the object given away to anyone for a purpose or reason? Are there other people who might want or need the item?

16. Visit the lost-and-found office in public locations.
If you’ve lost your item at a restaurant, store, museum or other public place, go to the Lost and Found office to ask if your item has been handed in. If not, you can leave your contact info to let you know if it does show up.

17. Post fliers for the lost item
If you can’t find your lost item and you know you left it in a certain zone, then make up a flier. Describe the item carefully and provide your contact info. Post the fliers on notice boards, bulletin boards, trees, telephone poles and other places where they’re likely to be seen. You may wish to offer a reward. Use our free, convenient Lost and Found form to create a suitable flier

18. File a Lost and Found Report
It’s important to send a Lost and Found Report to the venue, event or transportation company. If it’s a phone or other connected device, you also need to report the loss to the network operator. If it’s a lost passport and you are abroad, you’ll probably need to send the report to an embassy. You may also need to take or send a report to police.

19. Insurance Companies
Many home insurance policies cover you for lost items outside the home. They usually insist that the loss is reported to police or other authorities. You should also notify the insurers promptly, obtain a claim form and send the report with it.

Make a place for everything

Use hooks for keys, bags and umbrellas by the entrance to your home. Baskets, bowls, boxes or shelves can be used for gloves, hats, goggles and shades. Have a tray for all your remotes.

Create multiple charging points for phones

Make it a habit to only put your phone by a charging point.

Use silly labels at first

Place large silly coloured signs and labels around saying “keys” or “shades” for a few weeks. so you put things in the right places.

Have specific spots to keep items

Use certain spots where you put items at the end of the day. Be as specific as you can when putting your items away. Hang keys on a designated hook in the hallway — always put them on the same hook.

Use multiple zones

If you use front and back doors, make a place in both areas. Place a second hook or basket by the back door. When you get home always put your keys on the designated hook. When you can’t find your keys, you only have two places to look.
